ABC's of Pregnancy: K is for Kegels

What in the world are kegels and why does everyone talk about them?

In the most basic sense, kegel exercises are a workout for your pelvic floor. They help prevent incontinense issues and other pelvic floor problems. Childbirth is one of the main ways that weaken our pelvic floor so keeping it strong is so important.

Most moms know the long running joke of “just had a baby and can’t jump on a trampoline or laugh too hard.” Although this joke is hilarious, it also is a little concerning! If this sounds like you, don’t stress. There’s a lot you can do to combat these issues early on.

One thing we recommend to all our clients is starting pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy and continuing it after pregnancy. Just like any muscle, our pelvic floor has to be thought about and taken care of. We have to learn how to relax our pelvis as well as contract those muscles. The help of a pelvic PT can be extremely helpful and its one thing every woman should look into.

Here’s a list of some of the Pelvic PT’s in the Kansas City area. Give them a call and make an appt today.
